The roots of the hospital service in Subotica date back to year 1841 when the patients were located in two rooms with 12 beds. The modern hospital in pavilion type was built in 1897. In that time it had 165 beds, and only after a few years that number was 470. In the seventies, thanks to great help from the citizens of Subotica which contributed to the financing of the construction, apart of the existing pavilions, a new hospital building was built in the block type. Construction was finished in 1972.
From its beginnings to this date General Hospital Subotica is a modern establishment, as in its architecture as well as its outstanding personnel, who have always been in the service of the patients and citizens and have prevailed even in the worst of times. Today’s aid station includes the pavilion part of the old hospital and the new building of the block type. Currently it has 800 beds and modern equipment. Apart of the aid station, the hospital has also an outstanding diagnostic ward which includes Radiology and Laboratory services, and there are also Ward for pathological and histological diagnostic and Ward for Blood Transfusion.
General Hospital has 1.432 employed health workers. Out of that there are 166 doctors, specialists and sub-specialists, Master of Arts and PHD’s. Apart of the doctors, the hospital has 19 other university educated workers of other sciences. The majority of employees, about 780, are nurses and technicians and another 460 workers in common wards, or assistant staff.
